How Could Video Games be Designed to Facilitate
Personal and Spiritual Growth?
A Mixed Methods and Integral Study |
Abstract
Based on Integral Psychology, six different methodologies were applied to explore the potentials of using video games to catalyze horizontal and vertical development (translation and transformation) through the Conveyor Belt of growth. Using AQAL and Integral Play theories as frameworks, various qualitative and quantitative studies were conducted, including phenomenological and structural development analysis, systems research, empirical survey, discussions with lead integral thinkers (Wilber & Zeitler) & game designers (Erickson, Bioware), and attendance to the world’s biggest Game Developers Conference 2008. The potential applications of video games for catalyzing development were not only confirmed, but highly deepened and expanded into powerful developmental design practices and ideas.
